Maryland Governor: Theodore R. McKeldin
Maryland State Archives
|
He was governor during a precarious time dealing with segregation issues. The University of Maryland integrated two black students. Maryland looked like the tolerant state that was working towards preserving the civil rights of all races. He mourned when Dr. Martin Luther King was murdered. He was saddened by the loss of an American hero.
Times in Maryland was changing, people were interested in more than their work. People were gaining careers which led to the height of suburbia. People traveled on those paved roads back and forth from their homes to their businesses. Many improvements were being made in the living conditions of families. People no longer stayed home, they were involved in their communities, schools and politics. Maryland's population movement was assisted by the policies of McKeldin. His city saw people leaving on the roads he helped create. This left a cluster of city dwellers and the new improved tax base of the suburbs.
