Packing houses, particularly on the Eastern Shore, provided work for many women. In addition to crabs and oysters, the companies often used the same facilities and laborers to can vegetables, meat, and fish. Experienced crab pickers produced as much as a hundred pounds of crabmeat in a single day. In 1936 --thirty years after this picture was made--they were paid six cents a pound.
